In a context where cloud adoption is accelerating rapidly, many organizations face a common challenge: how to maintain financial control and cost visibility across increasingly distributed and complex environments.
A leading insurance company in Spain took a significant step forward in transforming its AWS cost management model by embracing generative AI as a key enabler of better decision-making.
The objective was clear: to simplify access to financial information, improve cost visibility, and equip teams with an agile tool that would enable continuous analysis and optimization of cloud spending.
To achieve this, it relied on Altostratus, part of Telefónica Tech, and AWS to design and implement an innovative solution based on generative AI.
The challenge of managing costs in multi-account environments
As the organization expanded its presence on AWS—surpassing 20 active accounts and increasing its monthly investment—financial management began to grow more complex.
Cost analysis required navigating multiple tools and consoles, making it difficult to obtain a global view and slowing down decision-making. In addition, the presence of shared services and distributed environments—such as container platforms—made it even more challenging to understand cost attribution and allocation.
This context highlighted the need to evolve toward a more efficient, scalable, and data-driven model capable of providing centralized visibility and enabling more agile financial management.
A new way to interact with cloud costs
To address this challenge, Altostratus designed and implemented a generative AI–based solution that enables users to interact with financial data using natural language.
The solution is based on a conversational assistant deployed on AWS, enabling teams to instantly query cost, usage, and budget information without needing to navigate multiple technical tools.
Through natural language questions, users can obtain detailed analyses by service, account, or environment, enabling a faster and more accessible understanding of cloud spending.
In addition, the solution was securely integrated into the customer’s environment, ensuring controlled access to information and compliance with the required security standards.
The technology behind the solution
- Generative Artificial Intelligence on AWS
- Amazon Web Services Bedrock for conversational capabilities
- Integration with AWS Cost Explorer, Budgets, and pricing APIs
- Multi-account architecture with secure cross-account access
- Secure web interface with authentication and MFA
- Cost allocation tagging strategy
How generative AI transforms cloud financial management
The solution delivers direct value to both technical and financial teams:
IT and Cloud teams
Immediate access to cost information without relying on complex tools, enabling easier analysis and continuous optimization.
Finance (FinOps) teams
Greater visibility and control over spending, with the ability to identify deviations, analyze trends, and improve budget planning.
The organization as a whole
Faster, data-driven decision-making with a unified view of cloud consumption.
This approach enables a shift from a reactive to a proactive cost management model.
Technology that drives smarter decision-making
The project enabled the organization to transform the way it accesses and uses financial information in the cloud.
Thanks to the introduction of generative AI, teams can obtain insights in seconds, significantly reducing the time spent on manual analysis and removing friction in data access.
In addition, the implementation of a structured tagging strategy laid the foundation for more accurate cost allocation and future application-level traceability, especially in containerized environments.
As a result, the organization has improved its ability to control, optimize, and plan AWS spending, establishing a solid foundation to further evolve its FinOps model in the future.
