In a context shaped by an aging population and the need for more sustainable care models, Telefónica Spain launched an innovative initiative to improve the autonomy, safety, and well-being of older adults in their own homes.
The goal was clear: to harness the potential of generative artificial intelligence to create an accessible, human-centered, and easy-to-use solution capable of supporting older adults in their daily lives while also facilitating the work of family members, caregivers, and service providers.
To achieve this, Telefónica relied on Altostratus, part of Telefónica Tech and AWS to design and implement a pioneering voice- and cloud-based solution.
The challenge of supporting an increasingly aging population
Spain is undergoing a significant demographic shift. People over 65 already account for around 20% of the population, and this figure is expected to reach 30% in the coming decades. Although most wish to remain in their homes for as long as possible, many live alone, experience unwanted loneliness, and face difficulties interacting with traditional digital solutions.
This situation presents significant challenges for families, public administrations, and service providers: rising care costs, a lack of continuous monitoring, and difficulties in maintaining fluid and secure communication. Existing solutions, based on complex interfaces, are not always adapted to the real needs of this group.
A new way to support older adults at home
To address these challenges, Telefónica developed “Aging at Home,” an assistance solution for older adults based on generative artificial intelligence, with voice as the main interaction interface.
The solution is based on a virtual assistant deployed on Amazon Echo Show devices, enabling older adults to interact naturally without technological barriers. Through voice commands, they can make video calls, receive reminders for appointments or medication, manage their daily schedule, or request help in case of emergency. In addition, the assistant includes conversational capabilities that support companionship and everyday interaction.
Altostratus was responsible for developing the AI platform and conversational logic, integrating the solution on AWS with a cloud-native, secure approach designed to evolve toward new use cases in the connected care space.

How “Aging at Home” improves home care
The solution delivers value to all stakeholders involved:
- Older adults: an accessible voice-based interface that promotes autonomy, enhances safety, and supports daily organization.
- Families and caregivers: improved visibility, seamless communication, alerts, and remote monitoring capabilities.
- Service providers and public administrations: centralized device management, activity monitoring, and the ability to deploy care services at scale.
This approach helps reduce unwanted loneliness and improves coordination of home care.
Technology designed to improve life at home
The project successfully validated the use of generative artificial intelligence as an accessible interface for older adults, significantly reducing barriers associated with digital literacy.
The solution demonstrated its ability to improve users’ autonomy, safety, and quality of life, as well as to facilitate communication and remote management for families and service providers. Thanks to its cloud-native architecture, “Aging at Home” is ready to scale and evolve toward new home care and connected care services driven by Telefónica.
